Migrating to software-defined networking will move faster than the operator of the migration to IP (Internet Protocol) in the late 1990s, Facebook technical operations of the former head of said Wednesday.

Network administrators and vendors began to embrace the SDN (software-defined networking) due to network operators need more control over their infrastructure and want to adjust them more for their own needs, said Jonathan Heiliger, who resigned as Facebook's vice president of technical operations last month. He spoke on Wednesday at the top of the network is open at Stanford University, where more than 600 participants discussed technology that controls the network independently of the underlying infrastructure.

Just as the telecommunications industry after moving to the IP of a special system such as an ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), it will adopt the SDN site of network architecture is unique to each vendor, Heiliger said. Adopting common standards for ELEMENTARY SCHOOL will help vendors to compete, such as the IP did, but it will also help deploy new services and even allows their companies to apply customer service among their own sites through a network operator, he said.

Because of their motivation, migrating to SDN will take a little time from moving gradually to the IP, which took several years, Heiliger said. But it will not start for 18 to 24 months, he added. Overall the software stack to SDN to adults, he said.

Before he left Facebook, Heiliger helped found the Open Network Foundation, which is developing a standard for other OpenFlow and SDN. Heiliger announced his plans to leave Facebook earlier this year and is now an entrepreneur and investor.
